Current helium supply crisis shows the urgency of manufacturing next generation cryogen-free MRI and cryogen-free NMR. Notice that each year $50 Billion are spent for MRI scans in the US. In 2007, Columbus Superconductors, ASG Superconductors, and Paramed Medical Systems indeed produced 0.5T cryogen-free Open MRI, employing MgB2 wires and two GM cryocoolers. However, its image quality is not good enough, compared to that of current NbTi-based 1.5T MRI, seriously limiting marketability. Cutting Edge Superconductor (CES) has a worldwide patented technology on MgB2 wire to improve its critical current, which enables cryogen-free 1.5T MRI and cryogen-free NMR. CES is collaborating with LUVATA, GE, Columbus Superconductors, BRUKER, and MIT. We report the current status of manufacturing next generation cryogen-free 1.5T MRI and cryogen-free NMR.
