The fundamental knowledge that has been generated and accumulated in chemistry research provides a foundation for the development of many industrial technologies which design, process, and produce chemicals and materials. More specifically, it is well recognized that surface and interface chemistry plays a key role in heterogeneous catalyst technology and semiconductor-based technology, and nanotechnology. However, the impact of surface and interface chemistry on an important business sector, passive microelectronic and electro-mechanic components has been long overlooked. In this industry, the core technology is the design and fabrication of complicated and functionalized multilayer microstructures by using diverse materials including polymers, ceramics, metals, and composites. Therefore, in this industrial framework, it is critically important to attain molecular-level understanding and the precise control of physico-chemical processes at the surface and interface, including wetting, adhesion, adsorption/desorption, dispersion, electro- and vacuum-deposition, and chemical reaction. This presentation will summarize the technical advances and trends in passive microelectronic component industry that drive and necessitate the studies on surface and interface chemistry. The presentation’s focus will be on a few examples of our recent studies conducted in Samsung Electro-Mechanics, one of world-leading manufacturer of electronic components including passive components like MLCC (multi-layered ceramic capacitor), PCB (printed circuit boards), and opto-mechanical modules based on advanced ceramic and polymer material and multilayer thin film technologies.
