-Abstract-
Some attempts have recently been made in our lab to chemically control cellular metabolism at the single-cell level, based on designed manipulation of interfaces between biological cells and chemical materials. The examples include the formation of ultrathin, hard shells on individual bacteria for endowing the bacteria with exogenous properties, possibly leading to the generation of a new class of hybrid entities, called artificial spores. Another is nanochemotopographcial control of neuritogenesis (and hopefully synaptogenesis), where the accelerated neurite-outgrowth of neurons is observed on nanometer-scaled topography, in the aim of chemically generating artificial neuronal-networks in 3D. Proofs-of-concept will be presented in the talk.
