Hydrogen is expected to become the major fuel of the future. Eventually it should be manufactured from renewable energy sources such as solar energy. Photocatalytic water splitting is an ideal technology to convert solar energy directly into hydrogen. In spite of the remarkable progress made in the last decade, there are still many technical challenges remaining particularly in finding photocatalytic materials and reaction systems of high efficiency and durability. This presentation discussesour research efforts at POSTECH in search of new materials and systems for solar hydrogen production from water. It will be demonstrated that nanoscale materials and their synthesis in a controlled manner could play critical roles in the progress of the field.
