-Abstract-
Energetic particles impinging on a solid surface cause the release of atoms and molecules from this surface, a process commonly termed sputtering. The ion species emitted in sputtering can be monitored very efficiently by mass spectrometry and may provide detailed information on the pertinent emission and ionization mechanisms. The presentation will discuss selected aspects of these processes:
● The formation, lifetime and structural properties of metastable molecular anions such as H2-, N2-, CO-, and LiF32-, analyzed by mass spectrometry, ion trap methods and Coulomb explosion imaging, are outlined.
● Using large gas cluster ions as bombarding species, the emission of intact organic and biological molecules from surfaces is observed. The occurrence of these “soft” ejection processes is found to depend strongly on the energy per cluster atom, and may lead to a pronounced reduction of molecule fragmentation.
It is emphasized that an improved understanding of such basic ion-formation principles could be beneficial for the characterization of solid materials by high-resolution mass spectrometry.
