-Abstract-
Porous metal-organic frameworks decorated with exposed metal centers are of interest due to possible applications, such as heterogeneous catalysis and gas storage. We have developed 2D and 3D porphyrin frameworks, constructed from meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin and M2(COO)4 paddle-wheel metallic clusters. In this homologous series, porphyrins are capable of incorporating a large number of transition metals, without affecting the framework topology. Isostructural porphyrin frameworks are decorated with various metals including Zn, Co, Fe, Mn, and Pd. Some of these materials contain open metal sites inside the channels when the stacking pattern of the 2D porphrin layers is properly controlled. Emerging applications using these new materials will be discussed.
