-Abstract-
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Since its discovery in 1981, HIV-1 has infected more than 60 millions of people worldwide, about 20 millions of which have died of the infection. The pandemic has posed a great socio-economic challenge not only to the developed countries but also to developing and underdeveloped countries. Over the past two and half decades, we have learned a great deal about the basic virology of HIV-1 including infection and pathogenesis. Meanwhile, the highly active anti-retrovirol therapy (HAART) has become the most effective modality to treat and manage the HIV/AIDS patients. However, the inability of the HAART to eradicate the viruses from the body of the infected individuals and unsuccessful development of a HIV/AIDS vaccine mandate continued and sustained investment into basic research, disease prevention and management, and development of new therapeutics. The seminar will review the past, the present and the future of HIV/AIDS infection, pathogenesis and therapy. In addition, the seminar will discuss the opportunities and challenges on each of these topics.
